What we do

We support people and organisations to contribute to Wikipedia, Wikidata and other Wikimedia Foundations projects through events, training and partnerships. We:

  • Train people and organisations to learn about and how to edit Wikipedia and other Wikimedia platforms
  • Support experienced editors to continue to grow and develop their contributions to Wikimedia platforms through networking and training
  • Run workshops, edit-a-thons and events with our network of Wikimedia New Zealand Facilitators and Editors
  • Co-design programs and partnerships that address gaps and bias on Wikimedia Foundation projects
  • Run and facilitate local engagement in global campaigns like Wiki Loves Earth and #1Lib1Ref
  • Connect regional editors with the global editing community
  • Advocate for open access and the creation of free cultural works

Wikipedian at Large (WPAL) project

Dr. Mike Dickison will serve as our New Zealand Wikipedian at Large in the first half of 2024.

This initiative is made possible through a generous grant from the Wikimedia Foundation, facilitated by Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ). The primary goal of this project is to foster collaboration between New Zealand organisations, its people, and Wikipedia, advancing open knowledge in the process.

Stationed in Christchurch, Mike will collaborate with a diverse array of individuals and institutions. A key focus of this project involves providing training and mentorship to individuals eager to explore the enriching realm of Wikipedia editing. Our overarching objective is to enhance diversity within our editor community and, by extension, contribute to a more diverse representation on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia platforms.

We anticipate the positive impact that this endeavour will have on the realm of open knowledge and extend an invitation to everyone to join us in this collaborative venture.
